The Bangladesh Pilgrim and Haji Welfare Council has called on the government to shut down travel agencies for charging exorbitant prices for Biman Bangladesh Airlines tickets on the Dhaka-Jeddah route.

They expressed their demand at a press conference held at the Dhaka Journalists Unit on Saturday.

According to Board Chairman Abdullah Al Naser and Secretary General Abdul Baten, travel agencies have created an artificial ticket crisis by illegally booking hundreds of tickets on the Dhaka-Jeddah route with the help of some corrupt branch officials from the Motijheel office in Biman.

According to the organization, the actual fare is 67,000 Tk, but the illegal union charges 78,000 to 80,000 Tk, forcing Umrah pilgrims to pay an additional 11,000 Tk for each ticket.

In August, Saudi Arabia began receiving requests from Omra from other countries for vaccinated pilgrims after about a year and a half of being banned from overseas worshipers due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Biman resumed flights to Saudi Arabia from May 29.
